Agartala: Feb 07: In a recent incident, the Government Railway Police (GRP) apprehended three Bangladeshi nationals who had unlawfully crossed into Indian Territory via the Dharmanagar railway station in North Tripura district. Among the detainees are two women—Salma Begum (23) and Tahera Begum (42)—along with a child. Their origin lies in Amtali village, situated within the Maulvibazar police station jurisdiction under Basirhat district. The GRP promptly handed them over to the Dharmanagar police station on the same night.
Over the past few months, several instances of illegal immigration have been reported across different regions of Tripura. Despite the central government’s substantial investment in barbed wire fencing along the border, unauthorized entry persists. The Border Security Force (BSF), entrusted with safeguarding the border, faces criticism for its inability to prevent such infiltrations. However, the BSF maintains that it is diligently working to enhance border security.
The issue of illegal immigration remains sensitive in Tripura, given the state’s extensive border with Bangladesh. Historical precedent underscores the challenge posed by Bangladeshi nationals seeking refuge in Tripura. While the central government continues its efforts to curb illegal immigration, the focus must also extend to the well-being and rights of legally residing Bangladeshis in India.
