Agartala, September 13: CCTV footage has helped police make a breakthrough in the investigation into the alleged necklace-snatching of an elderly woman in Agartala’s Bankumari area, with one person detained and the motorcycle suspected to have been used in the crime impounded.
The incident was reported on September 11 in the Jogendranagar-Bankumari area, where Gita Das had gone for a morning walk with a neighbour. Police said two men riding a motorcycle allegedly approached her and snatched her necklace before escaping from the spot.
Das later approached the East Agartala Police Station and lodged a complaint nearly two hours after the incident. Based on her complaint, police began efforts to identify the persons involved and trace the vehicle allegedly used in the offence.
As part of the investigation, officers examined CCTV footage collected from cameras installed in and around the area. The recordings showed two persons wearing helmets travelling on a motorcycle and provided investigators with clues regarding the suspected vehicle and the movements of the riders.
Acting on the information gathered during the probe, police subsequently carried out an operation in the Radhanagar area. During the operation, one person was detained and the motorcycle believed to have been used in the necklace-snatching was seized and impounded.
East Agartala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar confirmed the development.
Sarkar said the victim had been walking with a neighbour when the incident occurred and that police received her complaint about two hours later. He said CCTV footage showing two helmeted riders on a motorcycle had emerged as an important part of the investigation.
The detained person is now being questioned to establish his alleged involvement and to gather information about the second individual seen riding with him.
Police are also examining other evidence and leads to determine the identities of those involved and reconstruct the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation is continuing, with further action expected after police assess the evidence gathered during questioning and the ongoing probe.
