Agartala, July 6:
Tensions within the BJP-Tipra Motha alliance in Tripura deepened on Sunday as Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma met Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, a day after BJP MP and former CM Biplab Kumar Deb visited him at Ujjayanta Palace. The back-to-back high-level meetings have fueled speculation over widening cracks in the ruling coalition.
The discontent stems from Tipra Motha’s growing frustration over the delayed implementation of the Tripartite Accord signed in March 2024 and the government’s alleged failure to curb illegal infiltration. The issue has gained urgency following a May notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs concerning the presence of Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants in Tripura.
Speaking after the meeting, Pradyot refrained from disclosing specific details but voiced serious concern over illegal immigration. “Infiltration is a serious problem. The future of Tripura and the Northeast is at stake. We must act now for the sake of the next generation,” he said. He urged all political parties to unite and address the issue beyond party lines, calling it “bigger than politics.”
On his party’s alliance with the BJP, Pradyot said he remains in touch with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and reiterated that discussions are ongoing. Responding to the CM’s recent claim that the Accord’s implementation is underway, Pradyot said, “Progress must be visible on the ground. The CM is aware of the urgency, and I hope action will follow.”
The political friction intensified after Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma threatened to withdraw support, and reports emerged that BJP MP Kriti Debi Singh Debbarma may resign if promises to tribal communities remain unfulfilled. The alliance now faces its most serious test since formation.
