A pall of grief descended over Kanchanmala Lakshmicherra on Saturday as residents came together to bid a tearful farewell to Ramzan Mia, a young man from Tripura who lost his life in a tragic railway accident in Odisha earlier this week.

Ramzan, the younger son of Sona Mia, had travelled to Chennai around six months ago in search of work to support his family. Like many youths from the region, he had left home with hopes of building a better future. However, tragedy struck during his return journey just four days ago when he reportedly fell from a moving train in Odisha, leading to his death on the spot.

Following the incident, railway police and local authorities carried out necessary formalities, including a post-mortem examination. With their assistance, Ramzan’s body was transported back to his native village, arriving in the early hours of Saturday.

Scenes of deep sorrow unfolded as his mortal remains reached Kanchanmala Lakshmicherra. Family members broke down in inconsolable grief, while villagers gathered in large numbers to pay their last respects. The atmosphere was heavy with mourning as friends, neighbours and well-wishers remembered Ramzan as a humble, respectful and cheerful young man. Many recalled his warm nature, kind-heartedness and willingness to help others, qualities that had endeared him to the entire community.

Residents said his untimely death has left a void that will be difficult to fill, particularly for his family, who had pinned their hopes on his earnings and aspirations. His passing also highlights the risks faced by migrant workers who often travel long distances under challenging circumstances in search of livelihoods.

Later in the day, Ramzan Mia was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites near his home, as prayers were offered for his soul. His funeral marked not just a personal loss for his family, but a collective moment of mourning for the entire village, united in grief over a life cut tragically short.
