After a gap of nearly a decade, Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council are set to be held in June 2026, following directions from the Supreme Court of India.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Advocate Bhaskar Debbarma stated that two matters were heard by a bench comprising Justice Manoj Mishra and Justice Manmohan. The first pertained to the long-pending Village Committee elections, while the second involved bills passed by the TTAADC that are awaiting approval from the state government.

On the election matter, the apex court accepted an affidavit submitted by the State Election Commission, which laid out a detailed roadmap for conducting the polls. According to the affidavit, the entire election process—including polling and declaration of results—will be completed by the last week of June 2026. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 20, 2026, ensuring that the process remains under its supervision.

In the second matter, the court admitted a writ petition filed by the TTAADC concerning pending bills and directed that notices be issued to the concerned respondents, marking the beginning of judicial scrutiny on the issue.

Reacting to the development, Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to the apex court. In a social media post, he termed the move a significant step toward justice for the Tiprasa people, noting that the long-awaited Village Committee elections would now finally take place.

The development is being seen as a landmark moment for grassroots democracy in Tripura. The court’s intervention not only paves the way for timely elections but also underscores the importance of accountability and proper governance within the autonomous district council framework.
