In a significant development, the polling date for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections has been advanced to April 12 from the earlier scheduled date of April 13. The decision comes in response to concerns over a clash with major cultural festivities in the state.

The move follows a unanimous resolution passed by the Tripura Legislative Assembly, where members across party lines urged a change in the election schedule. Legislators highlighted that April 13 coincides with Buisu, an important festival for the indigenous tribal communities, as well as the Bengali New Year. Holding elections on the same day was feared to affect voter turnout and participation.

Responding to these concerns, the authorities agreed to reschedule the polling date to ensure that voters can freely take part in both cultural celebrations and the democratic process. The decision has been widely welcomed by political leaders and community representatives alike.

Leaders from major political parties, including the BJP, Congress, CPI(M), Tipra Motha, and IPFT, had collectively supported the proposal, emphasizing the need to respect cultural sentiments while safeguarding electoral participation.

Chief Minister Manik Saha had earlier acknowledged the issue and assured that the matter would be taken up with the State Election Commission for necessary action. Following deliberations, the revised date was finalized.

The adjustment is expected to facilitate a smoother polling process across the ADC areas, ensuring maximum voter turnout. Authorities are now focusing on logistical preparations, including deployment of polling personnel and security arrangements, to conduct free and fair elections.

The rescheduling of the ADC polls underscores the administration’s effort to strike a balance between democratic obligations and cultural traditions, reinforcing inclusive governance in Tripura.
