Agartala: May 19: In response to growing concerns over traffic congestion in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas, the Tripura Transport Department has revised its traffic regulations for auto rickshaws. The changes were announced following a high-level meeting chaired by Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Thursday, aimed at balancing traffic management with demands from labor unions and stakeholders.
- Mohanpur Subdivision Autos: Autos from Narsingarh, Bamutia, Gandhigram, and Mohanpur can now travel up to the Gandhi Statue roundabout near Circuit House to drop passengers but must return immediately without waiting or queuing.
- Jirania Subdivision Autos: Autos from Jirania, Khairpur, and Ranirbazar are allowed to drop passengers either at the Chandrapur bus stand or near the Old Jail, depending on stakeholder preferences.
- Bishalgarh, Sekerkote & Amtali Autos: These autos may operate up to Nagerjala Motor Stand before returning.
- Student Autos: Reserved autos transporting students from rural areas may enter AMC areas for drop-offs at coaching centers but are not permitted to take on additional passengers within the city.
In addition, autos operating within AMC limits must display pink-colored fronts to distinguish them from those of other subdivisions. Strict legal action has been warned for any violations of the new guidelines.
These changes come in response to public feedback following guidelines announced during a June 17 press conference. The Transport Minister emphasized that while adjustments have been made to accommodate stakeholders, managing urban traffic remains a top government priority.
The meeting at the State Secretariat was attended by senior officials including Transport Commissioner, SP (West), SP (Traffic), Transport Secretary Uttam Kumar Chakma, and other law enforcement and administrative officers.
