Agartala, June 10:Tripura Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy on Tuesday urged the Director General of Police (DGP) to take swift action against miscreants who allegedly attacked the home of Youth Congress vice president Md. Sahajahan Islam in Agartala.
In a letter addressed to the DGP, Roy stated that on the evening of June 8, a group of hooligans targeted Islam’s residence at Santipara. The assailants reportedly vandalized the property and physically assaulted Islam’s family members, including his elderly parents, wife, and even his newborn child.
Calling the incident “deeply disturbing,” Roy demanded immediate legal action under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. He claimed the attack was triggered by a social media post made by Islam, and emphasized that such violent retaliation against political expression is unacceptable in a democratic society.
The Congress MLA also highlighted that Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Asish Saha and senior Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman were assaulted during their visit to the site following the attack. Both leaders reportedly sustained injuries in the confrontation.
Roy condemned the rising incidents of political violence in the state and urged the police to identify and arrest all those involved in the attack. He also requested adequate security for Islam and his family, stating that their safety must be ensured amidst the growing atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
“This lawlessness must be curbed immediately. Such acts not only endanger lives but also threaten the democratic fabric of the state,” Roy stated in his letter.
The Congress party has called for strict action and a thorough investigation into the incident to uphold justice and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
