Agartala, Aug 20 — In a bid to ease long-standing transportation challenges, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma from the Ramchandraghat assembly constituency has urged the introduction of a morning train service from Churaibari to Agartala.

On August 18, 2025, Debbarma submitted a formal letter to East Tripura MP Kriti Debbarman, stressing the urgent need for improved connectivity for nearly one lakh residents of the region. He argued that the absence of direct train services from Churaibari has created immense hardship, particularly after the closure of the nearby Kathaltali station.

Churaibari, considered Tripura’s gateway station, is a crucial transport hub for the state and also serves around 20 villages in neighboring Assam. Border villages such as Ranibari, Pencharchera, Sonaichari, and Sarala in Kadamtala block fall under 19 gram panchayats, collectively home to nearly 94,000 people who now struggle with travel difficulties.

At present, the only passenger train to Agartala departs from Dharmanagar at 5:50 AM. Residents of Churaibari are forced to spend between ₹500 and ₹600 to reach Dharmanagar early in the morning, a significant burden for daily commuters.

To address this, Debbarma proposed two measures:

  1. Replace the Dharmanagar-origin passenger train with a 5:00 AM service from Churaibari to Agartala.

  2. Extend the evening return service from Agartala to terminate at Churaibari instead of Dharmanagar.

According to him, these steps would benefit nearly two lakh people across Tripura and Assam’s border areas. Sharing details on social media, Debbarma confirmed that he personally handed over the letter to MP Kriti Debbarman, who assured him of immediate follow-up.

The MLA expressed optimism that the railway authorities would soon introduce the new service, calling it a long-overdue relief for thousands who have endured years of inconvenience.
