Agartala, April 9: A dramatic incident unfolded in Agartala on Thursday when an illegal Bangladeshi national attempted to escape from GB Hospital while under police custody, triggering concerns over security arrangements and monitoring of detainees.

The individual, identified as Sajal Rishi Das, is a resident of Brahmanbaria district in Bangladesh. According to police sources, he had illegally crossed the international border into India and was subsequently detained by authorities. Following legal procedures, he was lodged at Bishalgarh Central Jail.

On Thursday, Das was taken to GB Hospital for medical treatment under police supervision. However, during his stay at the hospital, he allegedly seized an opportunity to flee from custody. Reports suggest that he attempted to escape the premises by evading the security personnel assigned to guard him.

The escape attempt, however, was short-lived. Alert police personnel on duty quickly reacted to the situation and launched an immediate pursuit. Within a brief period, they successfully apprehended Das, preventing what could have been a serious security breach.

The incident has raised questions regarding the level of vigilance maintained during the movement and treatment of prisoners, particularly foreign nationals accused of illegal border crossing. Authorities are now reviewing the sequence of events to determine whether there were any lapses in security that enabled the escape attempt.

Senior police officials have indicated that an internal inquiry is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Steps are likely to be taken to strengthen protocols and ensure stricter monitoring in similar cases in the future.

Illegal border crossings remain a sensitive issue in the region, and such incidents highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in maintaining custody and preventing escape attempts.

Despite the scare, the swift response by police personnel ensured that the situation was brought under control without further complications. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain all aspects of the incident and to fix accountability, if any lapses are found.
