Krishnanagar, Aug 20 — A late-night police raid at the Bhagini Nivedita Girls’ Hostel in Krishnanagar on Tuesday has sparked widespread unease among students and raised serious questions over the management of the institution.

During the operation, police detained Debraj Chakraborty, a teacher and reportedly the brother of the hostel’s in-charge, Rupa Chakraborty. His detention has placed Rupa Chakraborty’s conduct and management style under sharp scrutiny.

Students allege that Debraj Chakraborty was frequently seen inside the hostel premises, making many of them uncomfortable. “We don’t even know who he is or whether he’s truly related to the hostel in-charge. But this is a girls’ hostel, and many of us move freely for daily needs—using the bathroom, fetching water, going out. His presence makes us feel unsafe,” one student said.

Beyond safety concerns, residents have raised complaints about arbitrary administrative decisions. They claim the hostel in-charge recently announced a hike in hostel fees, stating it was mandated by a minister. However, when students requested official documentation, they were allegedly scolded rather than given clarity.

Additionally, students reported that the quantity of food served has been reduced without explanation, adding to their grievances.

Calling the situation “untenable,” students have appealed for urgent intervention from the concerned minister and higher authorities to ensure their safety, dignity, and fair treatment.

The incident has intensified calls for a thorough investigation into hostel management practices and greater accountability from those in charge. Parents and student groups have echoed these demands, stressing that women’s hostels must guarantee not only accommodation but also an environment of safety and trust.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
