Tripura Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) on Thursday organised a one-day piglet distribution programme at Jagannathpur Gram Panchayat under Chandipur RD Block as part of the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pig – NEH & SCSP Component.

The programme was attended by Sudhangshu Das, who personally handed over piglets to beneficiaries from the Fatikroy Assembly Constituency.

A total of 30 beneficiaries received piglets under the scheme, which aims to strengthen rural livelihoods through animal husbandry and promote pig farming as a sustainable source of income in villages. The initiative forms part of the state government’s broader efforts to support self-employment opportunities and improve the economic condition of rural and marginalized communities.

Speaking at the event, Minister Das emphasized the importance of livestock-based development programmes in generating employment and building self-reliant rural communities. He said the government is giving special focus to animal husbandry projects to create additional income opportunities for villagers while also improving nutrition and economic stability.

“This programme will help rural families become financially stronger and encourage self-reliance in villages. Pig farming has strong economic potential in Tripura and the Northeast, and such initiatives can significantly improve livelihoods,” Das said.

Officials from the Deputy Director’s Office in Unakoti district informed that the beneficiaries would also receive technical guidance, training and regular monitoring support to ensure proper rearing of the piglets. According to officials, the scheme is designed not only to provide livestock but also to help beneficiaries develop sustainable income-generating activities over time.

Local residents welcomed the initiative and described it as a practical and beneficial step for rural development. Many beneficiaries expressed hope that pig farming would provide them with additional earnings and long-term financial security.

Experts believe that with the increasing demand for pork across Tripura and other northeastern states, pig farming has emerged as a commercially viable sector capable of strengthening the rural economy. They noted that government-backed support and training programmes could further encourage villagers to adopt modern livestock farming practices.

The programme reflects the state government’s continuing focus on rural welfare, livelihood diversification and economic empowerment through agriculture and allied sectors.
