The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its red alert for Tripura until May 1, cautioning residents about intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds likely to impact several parts of the state. The advisory indicates heavy to very heavy showers across multiple districts, raising concerns about flooding, waterlogging, and disruption to normal life.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, districts including Khowai, West Tripura, Sepahijala, Gomati, and South Tripura are expected to receive rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 20 cm from April 29 to April 30. The IMD has specifically prolonged the red alert for West Tripura and Sepahijala until May 1, warning of continued heavy downpours. Other districts remain under an orange alert, with forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.

The effects of the ongoing weather system are already visible across the state. Official rainfall data shows Sepahijala recording the highest precipitation at 145.5 mm, followed by Dhalai with 99 mm and West Tripura with 91.5 mm. Khowai received 68.8 mm of rainfall, while Gomati and South Tripura reported 79.1 mm and 77 mm respectively. North Tripura and Unakoti witnessed relatively lower rainfall, at 37 mm and 17 mm.

Authorities have warned that continuous rainfall may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, potentially affecting transportation, essential services, and local infrastructure. Residents have been advised to stay alert, avoid open areas during thunderstorms, and adhere strictly to official safety guidelines.

While weather conditions are expected to improve slightly from May 2, caution remains necessary. Sepahijala and South Tripura will continue under an orange alert, while other districts are likely to be placed under a yellow alert. Officials stress that preparedness and vigilance are key as Tripura continues to deal with this phase of extreme weather, with emergency response teams kept ready to respond to any situation.
