Agartala, February 21: Manik Saha on Saturday expressed optimism that ties between Tripura and Bangladesh will gain fresh momentum following the formation of a new elected government in the neighbouring country. He said several stalled connectivity and trade projects are now expected to become operational.

Speaking on the sidelines of the unveiling of a bust of Syama Prasad Mukherjee at Nagerjala Bus Terminal in Agartala, the Chief Minister stated that key infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and regional connectivity had remained stalled due to recent political turbulence in Bangladesh. With political stability returning, he hoped these projects would gradually begin operations.

Saha highlighted the significance of Maitree Setu over the Feni river, which connects Sabroom in South Tripura with Bangladesh and provides access to Chittagong seaport. He noted that the bridge is complete and holds immense economic potential for both sides.

He also referred to the Agartala–Akhaura rail link project, which will connect Tripura directly to West Bengal through Bangladesh, substantially reducing travel time and easing transportation of goods and passengers.

“Both projects are ready and should gradually start operations. These will improve the economic condition of both countries. In fact, Bangladesh may benefit even more from us in the future,” Saha remarked.

He further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions India and Bangladesh progressing together in mutual cooperation. Expressing confidence in stronger bilateral engagement, Saha said that with political stability returning in Bangladesh, cross-border connectivity, trade and the longstanding relationship between Tripura and its neighbour sharing an 856-km border will deepen further.
