Agartala, March 23: The political atmosphere in Tripura’s 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency intensified on Monday as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jahar Chakraborty formally filed his nomination papers for the upcoming by-election, accompanied by a massive show of strength.

Chakraborty led a large and energetic procession from the BJP office at Padmapur to the office of Returning Officer Debyani Choudhury, where he submitted his nomination. The rally witnessed the participation of a significant number of party workers and supporters, with decorated vehicles, party flags, and slogan-shouting adding to the charged atmosphere.

Senior BJP leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, were present during the procession, underscoring the importance the party has attached to the Dharmanagar by-election. Party insiders claimed that the turnout at the BJP rally surpassed earlier processions organised by rival parties, projecting it as a clear indication of the party’s organisational strength ahead of the polls.

Jahar Chakraborty is a familiar face in Dharmanagar politics. He had earlier contested from the constituency in 2013 as a BJP candidate but was unsuccessful. This time, the party has once again placed its faith in him, banking on his experience, loyalty, and grassroots connect to secure victory.

The by-election was necessitated following the demise of veteran leader and sitting MLA Biswa Bandhu Sen, whose passing created a significant political vacuum in the constituency. The contest is expected to be closely fought, with multiple parties vying for dominance.

The seat is set to witness a triangular contest, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) fielding Amitabha Dutta, while the Congress has nominated Chayan Bhattacharjee.

With campaigning gaining momentum, Monday’s rally by the BJP marks a strong start to what is shaping up to be a high-stakes electoral battle. As the April 9 by-poll approaches, all eyes remain on Dharmanagar, where political parties are intensifying efforts to convert public mobilisation into electoral success.
