Addressing the gathering, Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu described the Legislative Assembly as the highest democratic institution of the state and said it has played a crucial role in representing the aspirations and interests of the people since its inception in 1963.

He urged legislators to uphold the dignity of the House by engaging in meaningful discussions, respecting differing viewpoints and adhering to constitutional principles. The Governor also called upon members to work collectively for the welfare and development of the people while strengthening democratic institutions through responsible legislative conduct.

Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said the Foundation Day was not merely a ceremonial occasion but an opportunity to remember the struggles and sacrifices that laid the foundation of democracy in Tripura. He said the Assembly’s history is rooted in the democratic movements of the erstwhile princely state and the efforts of members of the former Tripura Territorial Council, legislators and countless individuals who worked for representative governance.

Paying tribute to those who contributed to the state’s democratic journey, Chaudhury said the institution had been built through the aspirations, struggles and sacrifices of the people. Referring to India’s democratic evolution, he said the Constitution and parliamentary democracy emerged from the country’s freedom movement and the sacrifices of innumerable freedom fighters.

He urged lawmakers to uphold the highest standards of parliamentary debate, accountability and people-centric governance. Chaudhury also said the presence of former Speakers and legislators at the celebration offered the present generation an opportunity to learn from the Assembly’s rich parliamentary traditions.

The programme also featured the felicitation of former Speaker and Padma Shri awardee Kokborok scholar Naresh Chandra Dev Varma, who had also served as an employee of the Assembly.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, MLAs from the BJP, Congress and TIPRA Motha, former Speakers, former legislators, and Assembly officials and staff attended the function.
