Agartala, May 31: An elderly woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances in a forested area near her residence at Bardhanpara in Nandan Nagar, under the jurisdiction of Bodhjungnagar police station, on Saturday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Malati Rudra Paul. According to family members, she had left her house early in the morning for a routine walk but did not return. Later, her body was discovered in a forested area close to her home by a passerby who noticed her slippers lying on the roadside. Upon closer inspection, the body was found and her family was alerted.
Her son arrived at the scene and identified the body. She was immediately shifted to the hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. While the initial assumption pointed to a natural death—possibly a stroke—the family raised concerns about possible foul play after noticing that her gold earrings and neck chain were missing. Her bangles also appeared to have been forcibly tampered with, suggesting an attempted theft.
Speaking to reporters, her daughter-in-law said, “We thought she may have suffered a stroke, but when we saw her ornaments were missing, it seemed suspicious.”
Police launched an investigation into the incident soon after being informed. A team led by Officer-in-Charge of Bodhjungnagar Police Station, Krishnadhan Sarkar, visited the site. “We received information around 7 AM from the hospital. The body was found in a forested patch near her house. While there are allegations of missing jewelry, we found no visible injury marks on the body,” said Sarkar.
A forensic team has been deployed to collect evidence from the spot. Police await the postmortem report to determine the exact cause of death and further course of action.
