In a significant move aimed at addressing long-standing concerns in the healthcare sector, Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte conducted a surprise inspection of North Tripura District Hospital in Dharmanagar on Saturday. The visit comes after weeks of growing public complaints and media reports highlighting issues such as inadequate infrastructure, staff shortages, poor sanitation, and alleged irregularities in hospital operations.

Arriving from Agartala at around 9 a.m., Gitte carried out a detailed assessment of the hospital’s functioning. He inspected the Outpatient Department (OPD), emergency services, patient wards, and other key facilities, closely reviewing healthcare delivery, infrastructure deficiencies, and administrative management. The Health Secretary also held discussions with hospital authorities to gather first-hand information on the challenges faced by the institution.

The inspection was attended by District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, Chairperson of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti, Director of Health Services, Chief District Medical Officer Dr. Dipak Haldar, Medical Superintendent Bhaskar Das, and other senior officials.

Following the review, Gitte announced a series of measures aimed at transforming the hospital into a modern healthcare facility. The proposed reforms include recruitment of additional medical staff and specialist doctors, establishment of a state-of-the-art Trauma Centre, expansion of bed capacity, construction of a new hospital building, and installation of high-capacity power backup systems. He also directed officials to expedite the delivery of diagnostic reports, including CT scan results, and improve essential services such as drinking water facilities.

Addressing the media, Gitte emphasized that all shortcomings must be addressed on priority. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring efficient, reliable, and patient-friendly healthcare services across the state.

The inspection is being viewed as a crucial step in Tripura’s broader healthcare reform agenda, raising hopes that persistent issues at district hospitals will finally be resolved through timely implementation of the announced measures.
