The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election, with its candidate Jahar Chakraborty winning by a massive margin and reinforcing the party’s stronghold in North Tripura. Chakraborty polled a record 24,009 votes, far ahead of his rivals, triggering celebrations across the constituency.

According to official results, Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee received 5,903 votes, while CPI(M)’s Amitabha Datta secured 5,957 votes. Other candidates lagged significantly, with Amra Bangali’s Bibash Ranjan Das getting 273 votes, SUCI’s Sanjoy Chaudhury 224, and Independent candidate Brajalal Debnath 124 votes. A total of 440 voters opted for NOTA.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha congratulated Chakraborty, thanking the people of Dharmanagar for their overwhelming support. In a message, he said the mandate reflects trust in the BJP’s governance and reiterated the government’s commitment to development, peace, and progress in the region.

Senior BJP leaders, ministers, and party workers hailed the victory as a strong endorsement of the party’s development agenda. Jubilant supporters celebrated outside the counting centre with processions, slogans, and distribution of sweets, turning Dharmanagar into a festive hub.

The by-election was necessitated by the demise of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December 2025. Polling, held on April 9, recorded a high voter turnout of 80.04 percent, indicating strong public participation.

Counting took place at PM Shri Dharmanagar Government Girls’ School under tight security. Senior police officials supervised a three-layer security arrangement to ensure a smooth and peaceful process.

With this emphatic win, Chakraborty now takes forward the legacy of Biswa Bandhu Sen, carrying high expectations as the BJP further consolidates its position in Tripura.
