Agartala, June 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Tripura this week to review border security arrangements and assess the progress of fencing along the India-Bangladesh border ahead of the proposed implementation of advanced smart border management systems, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting preparations at Pushpabanta Palace for an upcoming foundation stone laying ceremony, Dr. Saha said border security will be the primary focus of the Home Minister’s visit. He noted that while it may not be possible for Shah to physically inspect every vulnerable stretch, he is expected to visit several critical locations requiring immediate attention.
The Chief Minister said the Centre is considering the introduction of smart border management technologies in Tripura as part of a broader initiative to strengthen surveillance and security along international borders in eastern and northeastern states. Similar systems are also proposed for Assam and West Bengal to improve monitoring and address security challenges in sensitive border areas.
According to Dr. Saha, Amit Shah will arrive in Agartala on June 4, with key official engagements scheduled for June 5.
Besides reviewing border infrastructure, the Union Home Minister is expected to participate in a programme related to the redevelopment of the historic Pushpabanta Palace. The royal property is being transformed into a luxury heritage hotel under an agreement signed between the Tripura government and the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), a Tata Group enterprise.
Dr. Saha also revealed that he will make two important presentations at the upcoming North Eastern Council (NEC) meeting. One will focus on attracting greater investment to the Northeast, while the other will address regional connectivity and infrastructure development.
Highlighting the importance of improved transportation networks, the Chief Minister said connectivity remains a major challenge for the region and discussions at the NEC meeting will explore solutions to accelerate economic growth and development across the Northeast.
