The Principal Opposition CPIM on Saturday lodged an FIR against BJP leader Tinkubrata Das, a member of the ruling party’s Barjala Mandal on the outskirts of Agartala, for allegedly making an “offensive and threatening” remark against CPIM workers.
A video that recently went viral on social media purportedly shows Das threatening CPIM workers, warning that he would “peel off their skin” if they refused to “rectify their mistakes.” The remark reportedly came amid celebrations held at the Mandal office following the NDA’s landslide victory in the Bihar Assembly elections.
Two days after the incident, a CPIM delegation led by Sadar Division Secretary Amal Chakraborty filed an FIR at West Agartala Police Station. Barjala MLA Sudip Sarkar was also present during the submission.
Speaking to the media, Chakraborty said, “The NDA’s victory in Bihar is part of the normal democratic process. But immediately after the results, an abnormal situation arose in our state. Under the leadership of certain BJP workers, violence and terror spread across Tripura. Party offices were burnt, motorcycles were torched, and even fishery ponds were poisoned, causing severe financial losses to our supporters.”
Referring to the threat issued by Das, the CPIM leader added, “This BJP local leader openly warned that he would peel off the skin of our workers. We have repeatedly said the rule of law in Tripura has collapsed. People are being arrested simply for criticising the Chief Minister or taking a stand against the establishment, yet a ruling party leader can issue violent threats openly. This reflects the dominance of Mandal rule over lawful governance.”
Chakraborty said the FIR was filed in the hope that the administration would act impartially and uphold democratic values.
