Tripura CM Calls on Youth to Uphold Spirit of Patriotism

Agartala, July 26: The Congress on Sunday intensified its attack on the BJP-led Tripura government over the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, urging the Tripura High Court to take suo motu cognisance of the case and order a judicial probe while questioning the credibility of the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry.

Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan, Congress Working Committee member and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, accompanied by Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Asish Kumar Saha and other senior leaders, said only a High Court-monitored judicial investigation could uncover the truth behind the DGP’s alleged suicide.

Roy Barman argued that an impartial probe was not possible through an SIT headed by the West Tripura Superintendent of Police, stating that the police could not be expected to independently investigate the death of the state’s own police chief.

Raising several unanswered questions, the Congress leader said doubts persisted over whether the incident was a case of suicide or something else. He questioned why the state’s top police officer would allegedly end his life in his office rather than at his official residence and pointed to the absence of a suicide note as a matter requiring deeper investigation.

He also sought clarity on whether standard forensic protocols were followed after the body was recovered. Referring to opinions expressed by forensic experts, Roy Barman questioned who first reached the spot, whether proper photography and videography of the crime scene were conducted, and whether forensic evidence was scientifically preserved.

The former minister further alleged that the late DGP had faced humiliation and harassment in the days leading up to his death. Linking the case to recent anti-narcotics operations, he said the possible involvement of influential drug syndicates or other powerful interests should also be examined through an independent judicial inquiry.

Targeting Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Roy Barman said that if the government had “nothing to hide”, it should have no objection to a judicial probe. He also expressed disappointment that the Tripura High Court had not initiated suo motu proceedings, recalling similar interventions under former Chief Justice Deepak Gupta.

The Congress’s demand comes after the CPI(M), the main Opposition party, also sought a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death.
