Agartala, June 2: The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party, on Monday issued a 24 to 48-hour ultimatum to the Tripura government, demanding the immediate transfer of Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma. Failure to do so, the YTF warned, would lead to intensified district-wide protests in front of all government offices.
Addressing the media, YTF President Suraj Debbarma accused the government of shielding the DM despite growing public resentment. “If the public suffers due to government office closures, the responsibility will lie with the government,” he said. Debbarma also criticized the administration for prioritizing one officer over the sentiments of lakhs of indigenous people during a time of crisis triggered by flood-like conditions across the state.
Thousands of YTF supporters gathered outside the DM’s office in Udaipur, raising slogans and later locking the main entrance. Eyewitnesses reported a brief scuffle between YTF activists and security personnel, during which protesters breached a barricade to reach the office gate.
In anticipation of unrest, heavy security deployment was witnessed across Udaipur town, with barricades placed near key government buildings.
Reacting to Tipra Motha’s alliance with the BJP, Debbarma stated, “We may be part of the alliance, but we are not weak. We are the warriors of Maharaja Pradyot Kishore Debbarman and will not backtrack.”
The controversy stems from an incident on May 25, when DM Tarit Kanti Chakma reportedly refused to meet Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman and TTAADC CEM at his official residence. The party later sought administrative action, prompting Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to reportedly order a probe.
However, the YTF initiated protests before any formal action could be announced by the administration.
