TSF Holds Sit-In Protest Demanding Eviction of Illegal Immigrants in Northeast
Agartala, Aug 19 – The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), under the banner of the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), staged a sit-in demonstration on Monday to press for the eviction of illegal immigrants from the Northeast region.
The protest, held in Agartala and simultaneously across several parts of Tripura and other northeastern states, sought immediate steps for the detection and deportation of illegal migrants.
Speaking at the protest, TSF vice president John Debbarma said the influx of illegal immigrants has remained a persistent issue in Tripura and the wider region for more than four decades. “The issue of illegal immigrants is not new in Tripura or in other northeastern states. For over 40 years, we have been facing this problem. Following NESO’s call, we are protesting to demand detection and deportation of illegal immigrants,” Debbarma said.
He added that the student body would also submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister, urging the state government to take concrete measures. “We want strict implementation of directives issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and better coordination with other northeastern states to deal with this long-pending problem,” he said.
NESO, an umbrella body of student organisations from across the Northeast, has consistently voiced concern over demographic changes in the region caused by alleged unchecked infiltration. Student leaders argue that the rising presence of illegal migrants threatens the socio-political and cultural identity of indigenous communities.
The sit-in protest forms part of a larger regional movement demanding urgent government action to protect the rights and identity of indigenous populations. The TSF has indicated that similar demonstrations will continue if the issue is not addressed with priority.
