Agartala, July 18: The North East region, once overlooked in terms of development, is now experiencing significant growth in infrastructure and other key sectors, said Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder on Friday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a three-day National Seminar on ‘Infrastructure Development in the North East Region of India’ and the 109th Governing Council Meeting of the Indian Buildings Congress (IBC) at Prajna Bhavan, Agartala, the Mayor credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for this transformation.

“Before 2014, the Northeast’s development was largely ignored. After Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, the region began receiving the attention it deserved. Today, we are witnessing major progress in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and tourism,” Majumder said.

He emphasized the crucial role engineers have played in the region’s development journey and praised their ongoing contributions.

Highlighting Tripura’s advancements, the Mayor noted that earlier, students had limited options to pursue medical education despite their capabilities. “Today, the state boasts 400 medical seats, a remarkable achievement for aspiring doctors,” he said.

Majumder also criticized the previous government for neglecting tourism development. “The present administration is focused on unlocking the sector’s potential to drive economic growth,” he added.

He expressed optimism that the seminar’s deliberations would help shape a robust roadmap for the Northeast’s future infrastructure growth.

The event is organized by the Indian Buildings Congress (IBC) and hosted by the IBC Tripura Centre. It is being co-organized by the Union Ministry of DoNER, Public Works Department, Rural Development Department, and Urban Development Department, Government of Tripura, along with Tripura Tourism Development Corporation, Agartala Municipal Corporation, and engineering associations like IEI, IPHE, SEAT, ATDEA, and ASSET.

The seminar aims to foster dialogue and collaboration for sustainable infrastructure development across the Northeast.
