Unakoti district witnessed a significant development on Friday as nearly 100 families of Special Police Officer (SPO) jawans submitted a deputation to the District Superintendent of Police, Sudhambika R., pressing for urgent measures to improve the welfare and service conditions of SPO personnel. The memorandum, addressed to the Director General of Police, laid out a comprehensive 10-point charter of demands highlighting long-standing concerns faced by the force.

A three-member delegation formally handed over the document, drawing attention to the uncertainty surrounding SPO employment and the absence of adequate social and financial safeguards. The families underscored that despite playing a crucial role in maintaining law and order, SPO jawans continue to work under precarious conditions without the benefits and security available to regular police personnel.

Among the key demands raised were the regularization of jobs, implementation of the National Pension Scheme (NPS), and the introduction of proper allowances and insurance coverage. The delegation also called for improved service conditions, better remuneration, and measures to ensure long-term stability for SPO personnel and their families.

Speaking to reporters during the demonstration, one of the participants, Reshmi Debbarma, stressed the urgency of the situation. She stated that immediate government intervention is necessary to secure the rightful entitlements of SPO jawans, many of whom have been serving under challenging circumstances for years without adequate recognition or protection.

The families emphasized that their demands go beyond financial considerations. They highlighted the need for dignity, respect, and institutional acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by SPO personnel in the line of duty. Many expressed concern over the lack of job security and the vulnerability faced by families in the absence of pension or insurance benefits.

There is a growing sense of expectation among the demonstrators that the administration will take swift and positive steps to address their grievances. They hope that the authorities will recognize the critical role played by SPO jawans and implement measures that ensure not only their welfare but also their long-term security and stability.
