Biswa Bandhu Sen, the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, has passed away following complications from a massive cerebral stroke he suffered earlier this year. Sen, who was 72 and a senior politician with decades of public service, had been critically ill since the medical emergency struck in August 2025 and had been receiving treatment in Bengaluru before his death was confirmed.
On 8 August 2025, Sen suddenly collapsed at the Agartala Railway Station while preparing to board a train to his home constituency of Dharmanagar. Initial medical examinations revealed he had suffered a severe internal brain haemorrhage, a life-threatening form of stroke, prompting immediate surgery to relieve pressure and remove blood clots.
Following the emergency procedure in Agartala, his condition remained serious, and his family arranged for him to be airlifted to a hospital in Bengaluru for advanced neuro care. Medical bulletins over the following months indicated that he was under close observation and receiving specialised treatment as doctors worked to stabilise his condition.
Sen’s political journey spanned many years and multiple roles. A long-time member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was elected MLA from the Dharmanagar constituency several times and held key positions including Deputy Speaker before being elected Speaker of the Tripura Assembly in March 2023. His career was marked by active involvement in legislative affairs and regional politics.
Leaders and colleagues across party lines expressed their condolences following the news of his passing, reflecting on his contributions to the state’s legislative processes and public life. Tributes poured in from political figures and constituents who remembered Sen as a committed public servant.
The state of Tripura is expected to enter a period of official mourning, with further arrangements and tributes to be announced by government authorities in the coming days.
