With the sustained efforts of Chief Minister Manik Saha and a dedicated team of medical professionals, kidney transplantation has now become a reality at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital. This development has brought major relief to patients suffering from kidney-related ailments, who earlier had to travel outside the state for such critical procedures.

So far, five successful kidney transplants have been conducted jointly at AGMC and GBP Hospital. These surgeries were performed with the collaboration and guidance of transplant experts from AGMC-GBP and Shija Hospital and Research Institute, Manipur.

The first-ever kidney transplant in Tripura was successfully performed on July 8, 2024, marking a historic milestone in the state’s medical sector. The fifth transplant was carried out on November 4, 2025, further strengthening confidence in the local healthcare system.

According to officials, the two patients scheduled for transplantation this time are aged 33 and 36 years respectively. At present, all necessary medical tests and evaluations of both donors and recipients are being conducted at GBP Hospital to ensure readiness for the procedures.

A team of specialist transplant surgeons and medical experts from AGMC, GBP Hospital, and Shija Hospital will jointly participate in the upcoming surgeries, ensuring adherence to best medical practices.

Officials emphasized that kidney transplantation is conducted strictly in accordance with prescribed rules and ethical guidelines. Each case undergoes thorough scrutiny and requires prior approval from the authorized committee. In addition to mandatory medical examinations, proper donor-recipient compatibility and kidney matching are essential prerequisites before proceeding with the transplant.

The upcoming surgeries reflect the steady advancement of healthcare infrastructure in Tripura and offer renewed hope to patients in need of life-saving treatment within the state itself.
