Agartala, October 6: Tripura is preparing a comprehensive strategy to protect its biodiversity and promote sustainable management of natural resources while maintaining a balance between development and ecological conservation, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma said on Tuesday.
Debbarma was speaking at a state-level consultation on conservation, protection and sustainable management of biodiversity in the state, organised by the Tripura Biodiversity Board at Pragna Bhaban here.
The minister inaugurated the workshop, attended by scientists, environmental experts, members of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), local communities and other stakeholders.
The consultation focused on finalising the Tripura Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (SBSAP), which is expected to serve as a roadmap for strengthening conservation measures and promoting sustainable use of biological resources.
Debbarma said the state’s rich biodiversity could be protected only through coordinated efforts involving government departments, scientific institutions, local communities and other stakeholders.
He emphasised the importance of ensuring coexistence between people and the natural environment, including forests, wildlife, rivers and water bodies.
The minister said the government would work to further strengthen Tripura’s identity as a green state while ensuring that development activities are undertaken without compromising ecological balance.
The proposed strategy would incorporate suggestions and practical inputs received from scientists, experts, BMC members and local communities, he said.
Debbarma also called upon government employees and other stakeholders to adopt innovative approaches towards environmental conservation instead of restricting themselves to routine administrative practices.
He said government employees should use the opportunities available to them to experiment with new ideas, undertake pilot projects and develop practical solutions to challenges faced on the ground.
The minister urged BMCs and local communities to play a more active role in identifying biodiversity-related issues and developing solutions suited to their respective areas.
He assured participants that innovative proposals and meaningful initiatives aimed at strengthening conservation efforts would receive due consideration within the government system.
The consultation also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to share field-level experiences and suggestions that could be incorporated into the final biodiversity action plan.
Officials said the proposed SBSAP would seek to strengthen protection of Tripura’s biological resources while encouraging their sustainable management.
The strategy is also expected to integrate conservation priorities with development objectives and provide a coordinated framework for
