Agartala, October 7: TIPRA Motha founder and former chairman Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Barma on Wednesday announced his withdrawal from active politics, saying his decision was “clear and final” and not prompted by anger or temporary circumstances.

In a letter addressed to the people of Tripura, Deb Barma said years of public life and his prolonged efforts for implementation of the Tiprasa Accord had taken a toll on his health, family and personal peace.

“I will no longer hold political office or engage in day-to-day political activities,” he said, adding that he would now devote more time to his well-being and family.

Deb Barma, however, said he would remain connected with the people of Tripura and make his experience and advice available whenever required.

Recalling the formation of TIPRA Motha, he said the movement was established on the principle of “One platform, One voice, One Thansa” to bring together smaller groups and raise issues related to the rights and interests of indigenous communities.

Under his leadership, the movement emerged as a significant political force in the state. Deb Barma cited 3,428 elected Village Council leaders, 24 members of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council and 13 MLAs as markers of its growth.

He also mentioned the settlement of Bru refugees and his continued campaign for the Tiprasa Accord as important milestones in his political journey.

On the accord, Deb Barma said it was “bigger than any individual, party or political position” and belonged to the people and future generations.

He urged that the commitments under the accord be implemented within the stipulated timeframe, referring to assurances given by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Manik Saha.

“Otherwise, it will be a betrayal of the people’s trust,” he warned, while expressing hope that unity would prevail in ensuring its fulfilment.

Deb Barma acknowledged the physical and emotional strain caused by prolonged negotiations and said some decisions during the process may have weakened the collective position of the Tiprasa people.

He, however, said he was leaving politics without bitterness and expressed gratitude for the trust and support he had received.

“Tripura will always remain in my heart,” he said, signalling his decision to begin a quieter chapter centred on his family and personal well-being.

His withdrawal marks a significant transition for TIPRA Motha, which will now have to chart its political course without its founder playing an active role in day-to-day politics.
