In a strong rebuttal to the recently held public rally by Pradyot Kishore Debbarma under the banner of the One Northeast movement at Vivekananda Maidan (Astabal ground), former Member of Parliament Rebati Mohan Tripura convened a press conference at the BJP state headquarters to clarify the party’s stance and raise serious concerns about the campaign.

Addressing the media, Rebati Mohan Tripura alleged that the One Northeast initiative reflects a “fear of losing existence,” suggesting that the movement has been fueled by insecurity rather than grounded political logic. He sharply criticised the functioning of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), claiming that the council suffers from a lack of financial discipline and is not adhering to constitutional norms. According to him, administrative lapses within the ADC have resulted in governance failures, which he believes the organisers of the movement are attempting to divert attention from.

Rebati firmly rejected any proposal to divide Tripura or create a separate state, asserting that such demands are unrealistic and impractical. “Everyone can speak with courage, but creating a new state or dividing a small state like Tripura is not realistic,” he said. He acknowledged that travelling to Delhi to raise democratic demands is the right of every citizen or organisation, but maintained that such demands must be rooted in facts rather than rhetoric.

He further argued that the repeatedly raised demands for ‘Tipraland’ or a separate state have no basis, pointing out that the Tipra Accord—an agreement often referenced by the movement’s leaders—does not contain any provision or mention of a separate state. “If the Accord itself does not mention Tipraland, then why repeatedly demand the division of the state?” he questioned.

Rebati Mohan Tripura’s remarks mark a significant political counter to the One Northeast campaign, setting the stage for intensified debate over Tripura’s territorial integrity and regional political aspirations.
