Agartala, February: In a remarkable medical achievement, an eight-day-old baby successfully underwent a complex cyst surgery at Tripura Medical College on February 3 under the supervision of noted paediatric surgeon Dr Aniruddha Basak.
The newborn was delivered on January 26 at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGM Hospital), Agartala. During the initial medical examination, doctors suspected that the baby was suffering from a hernia on the left side of the abdomen and advised immediate surgical evaluation. Following this assessment, the infant was referred to Tripura Medical College for advanced treatment.
The baby was brought to the medical college on January 27, where the parents consulted Dr. Basak. Considering the child’s extremely delicate condition at just one day old, the surgeon recommended a series of essential diagnostic tests and advised the parents to wait briefly before proceeding with surgery.
After careful monitoring and evaluation, the operation was conducted on February 3. However, during further medical investigation, doctors discovered that the case was not a simple hernia. Instead, the infant was diagnosed with a rare and serious condition known as meconium cystic peritonitis.
According to Dr. Basak, a large cyst had formed inside the baby’s abdomen, exerting pressure on internal organs and causing significant discomfort and breathing difficulties. The complex procedure was successfully carried out to remove the cyst and stabilize the newborn.
The baby is now recovering well and showing positive signs of improvement. The grateful parents, Nandita Das and Prasenjit Biswas from Kamalnagar, Sonamura, expressed immense relief and happiness at their child’s steady recovery, praising the medical team for their timely intervention and expert care.
