Agartala, July 24: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) G.S. Rao on Friday constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the mysterious death of former Director General of Police Anurag, whose body was found at the State Police Headquarters in Agartala on July 20.

According to an order issued by the DGP’s office, Superintendent of Police (West Tripura) Namit Pathak will head the probe team. Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban), West Tripura, Dhruba Nath, and Sub-Inspector Subhojit Deb, who is currently investigating the unnatural death case, have been appointed as the other members.

The order authorises the SP (West) to co-opt officers from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or any other unit if required for the investigation. The probe team can also seek technical assistance from the Cyber Crime Unit of the Tripura Police Crime Branch. Weekly progress reports on the investigation will be submitted to the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) for onward review by the DGP.

Anurag’s body was found under mysterious circumstances in the washroom attached to his official chamber at the State Police Headquarters on July 20, triggering widespread shock within the police establishment and political circles.

The senior IPS officer was cremated with full state honours at his ancestral town of Baraut in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on July 22. His son, Abhishek, lit the funeral pyre in the presence of family members, senior police officers and hundreds of mourners. The Uttar Pradesh Police also accorded him a ceremonial guard of honour in recognition of his distinguished service.

Before his mortal remains were taken to Uttar Pradesh, Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, several ministers, Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Home Secretary Abhishek Singh, acting DGP G.S. Rao and senior civil and police officials paid their last respects in Agartala.

Meanwhile, the opposition CPI(M), CPI, Congress and several other political parties have demanded a judicial inquiry, monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court, to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of the state’s senior-most IPS officer. The Left parties and the Congress have also organised separate protest rallies pressing for a judicial probe.

A 1994-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Tripura cadre, Anurag had assumed charge as the state’s Director General of Police on May 17, 2025, after previously serving as DGP (Intelligence). His death continues to raise questions, making the outcome of the newly constituted SIT probe crucial.
