Tension prevailed in the Dashamighat area under Teliamura Police Station on Monday after locals detained two individuals suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals. The duo was later handed over to the police for verification and interrogation.
According to reports, residents noticed two unknown men roaming suspiciously in the locality during the day. When confronted, the men claimed to be residents of Assam. However, their inconsistent answers and inability to provide valid identification raised doubts among the locals. Alarmed by their behaviour, the residents immediately informed Teliamura Police.
Upon receiving the information, a police team rushed to the spot and took both individuals into custody. During questioning, the duo reportedly stated that they had come to the area to collect funds for a madrasa. However, they failed to produce any supporting documents, authorization letters, or proof of their claims.
This lack of evidence further intensified suspicions that the two might have crossed the international border illegally from neighbouring Bangladesh. Locals expressed concern that similar incidents have occurred in the past, demanding stricter vigilance along border areas and proper verification of outsiders entering their villages.
Police officials confirmed that both detainees are being interrogated to ascertain their true identity and citizenship status. The authorities are also examining whether they were part of a larger network or had any ulterior motives behind visiting the area.
The incident has sparked a sense of unease and curiosity among residents of Dashamighat, who are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the police investigation. Security in the area has been tightened, and patrolling has been intensified to prevent any untoward incident. Police assured that appropriate legal action will be taken once the inquiry confirms the duo’s identity and origin.
