The Tripura Chakma Students’ Association (TCSA) has announced a series of protest programmes condemning the brutal attack on Chakma students in Dehradun and alleging serious negligence by the local police in registering the case.

According to TCSA, the incident took place on December 9, 2025, at around 6:15 pm, when a few Chakma students were on their way to a local market to buy groceries. A group of local miscreants allegedly approached them from the opposite direction and began hurling racial slurs such as “Chinki,” “Chinese,” and “Momos,” along with using abusive language. When Michal Chakma requested them to stop, stating that they were Indians and students, the attackers reportedly became violent. Michal Chakma was assaulted with iron rods and sustained injuries. When his brother, Anjel Chakma, attempted to protect him, the miscreants allegedly stabbed him multiple times on the neck and abdomen.

Following the attack, students from the Northeast rushed the injured to Graphic Era Hospital in Dehradun, where they were admitted for treatment.

TCSA further alleged that when Northeast students went to the local police station between 8 pm and 9 pm on the same day to file an FIR, the police refused to register the complaint, downplaying the seriousness of the incident. Despite visiting the spot on December 10 and 11, the police allegedly continued to avoid registering the FIR. The association termed this as gross police negligence.

It was only after discussions with senior retired IPS officers, who later intervened and spoke to the local police, that the authorities agreed to register the FIR on December 12, 2025.

In protest against the incident and demanding justice, TCSA announced a candlelight march in Agartala city on December 29 at 4:30 pm. The organisation will also submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Tripura on December 30 at 10 am. Ahead of these programmes, TCSA organised a press conference at the Agartala Press Club on December 28 at 12 noon.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Indigenous Students’ Federation (TISF) has also announced a candlelight rally from Astabal to Rajbari Gate at 4 pm in solidarity.
