Agartala, May 13:
Manik Saha on Tuesday said that nurses play an indispensable role in strengthening the healthcare system and that the reputation of hospitals and medical institutions largely depends on the professionalism, behaviour, and efficiency of nursing staff.

The Chief Minister made the remarks while addressing a programme organised to mark International Nurses Day at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala.

Highlighting the importance of the nursing profession, he stressed the need to further strengthen public trust in nurses through improved training, skill development, and professional dedication. According to him, nurses remain one of the most important pillars of healthcare services and contribute significantly to patient care and recovery.

The Chief Minister said nurses often face both internal and external challenges while performing their duties, but overcoming such challenges with commitment and professionalism helps improve their experience and efficiency.

“It is impossible to build a strong healthcare system without a robust nursing structure,” he stated, urging nurses across the state to work with greater responsibility and compassion in their respective fields.

Referring to International Nurses Day, Manik Saha said the occasion is observed every year on May 12 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale and to honour the invaluable contribution of nurses to healthcare services worldwide. He mentioned that several programmes had been organised across the state, while the main celebration was held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan.

Speaking about developments in the healthcare sector, the Chief Minister claimed that Tripura had witnessed nearly an 80 percent reduction in patient referral cases over the past few years due to improvements in medical infrastructure and services.

He also announced that a medical college would be established in the ADC area. Besides this, the process of setting up a 50-bed super-speciality hospital in the state is underway. The government is prepared to provide land for the project, and investors have already shown interest, he added.

The programme was attended by Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director Dr. Debashri Debbarma, Director of Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine Dr. Anjan Das, Director of Medical Education Prof. H.P. Sharma, members of the Tripura Nursing Council, and other officials.

Nursing students were also felicitated with awards in different categories during the programme.
