Agartala, May 14: In a symbolic yet significant gesture promoting fuel conservation and austerity, Tripura’s Power, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath has decided to give up the use of official escort vehicles and instead travel by bicycle for short-distance journeys and public outreach programmes.

The minister announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that meaningful nation-building often begins with simple personal actions rather than grand declarations. His move comes in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to citizens and governments to reduce petroleum consumption and adopt sustainable practices.

Speaking about his decision, Nath said cycling reminded him of his childhood and helped him stay connected to the people and the soil. “This morning I once again heard the familiar sound of bicycle pedals from my childhood days. Staying close to the ground gives a different sense of belonging. Patriotism should not remain limited to speeches; it must be reflected in our everyday habits,” he said.

He also appealed to citizens to save fuel, protect the environment and contribute towards building a sustainable future for coming generations.

The initiative is part of a larger austerity and fuel-saving campaign launched by the Tripura government under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha following directives from the Prime Minister. As part of the campaign, the state government has introduced several measures to reduce expenditure and conserve fuel.

Among the steps announced, nearly 50 per cent of Group C and Group D employees have been directed to work from home on a rotational basis to reduce commuting and operational costs. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has also reduced the size of his security convoy by half, retaining only three accompanying vehicles during official movements.

Additionally, the Chief Minister has opted to travel by train instead of large road convoys during certain state visits in an effort to minimize fuel consumption and government expenditure.

Ratan Lal Nath’s decision to cycle to work has attracted widespread attention across Tripura, with many viewing it as a practical message encouraging responsible governance, environmental awareness and sustainable living through small but meaningful personal choices.
