A major grassroots livestock procurement drive under the Tripura Rural Economic Growth and Service Delivery Project (TRESP) has significantly strengthened women-led Producer Groups (PGs) across rural Tripura, promoting sustainable livelihoods through piggery development.

Implemented by the Tribal Welfare Department, Government of Tripura, with support from the World Bank, the initiative focuses on enhancing income opportunities for rural and tribal communities. Women members of piggery Producer Groups have actively participated in procuring healthy piglets and essential inputs, marking a step toward economic self-reliance.

In Pecharthal RD Block, under the BPMU TRESP unit, Sadak Piggery PG and Ujjei Jei Piggery PG successfully completed piglet procurement along with livestock insurance coverage. The programme also included feed procurement to ensure proper nutrition during the early growth stage. The process was carried out under strict supervision of BPMU and DPMU teams, along with technical experts from the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD), ensuring quality and transparency.

Similarly, in Hezamara RD Block, the Hamkwrai Piggery Producer Group under Dumrakaridak VC procured 14 improved-breed piglets from the government pig farm at Khumulwng. The procurement followed thorough health checks and precautionary measures to ensure disease prevention and better productivity. Officials and technical staff played a key role in facilitating the process.

Another successful distribution was carried out in Ompi RD Block, where members of Thumsa Piggery PG received piglets under the TRESP initiative. The event saw enthusiastic participation from women members and strong support from field-level functionaries, reflecting growing community engagement in livestock-based enterprises.

The Animal Resources Development Department has been instrumental in ensuring the supply of healthy piglets, offering technical guidance, and maintaining quality standards across all locations. Risk mitigation measures, including livestock insurance and continuous monitoring, have further strengthened the initiative.

Officials noted that such coordinated efforts are not only promoting piggery as a viable livelihood option but also building the capacity of women Producer Groups to manage sustainable enterprises. Through collaboration between PG members, field teams, and technical experts, TRESP continues to empower rural women, enhance household incomes, and drive inclusive economic growth across Tripura.
