Agartala, Aug 9: In a major boost to railway connectivity in South Tripura, the Ministry of Railways has approved new stoppages for the Sealdah–Sabroom–Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express at Jolaibari and Belonia railway stations. The decision will come into effect from August 14, 2025, and has been welcomed by local residents and public representatives alike.

The long-awaited move was initiated after Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb forwarded a representation received from senior journalist Pranab Sarkar to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in June last year. The proposal highlighted the travel difficulties faced by people of the region, especially students, senior citizens, and daily commuters.

Following a detailed review, the Railway Ministry approved the stoppages on an experimental basis to assess public response and passenger demand. This development is expected to significantly ease travel and improve accessibility for residents of South Tripura and adjoining subdivisions.

In a statement, MP Biplab Kumar Deb expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Union Railway Minister for addressing the long-pending demand of the people. “This decision will not only benefit local commuters but also enhance economic activities by improving access for businesspersons and tourists,” he said.

Local residents, particularly in Jolaibari and Belonia, have also welcomed the move and thanked the Ministry of Railways for recognizing the region’s connectivity needs. The new stoppages are expected to provide better rail access to remote areas, thereby fostering regional development and integration with broader national networks.

The introduction of these experimental halts will be closely monitored, and based on the passenger turnout and feedback, the ministry may consider making them permanent in the future.
