Agartala, July 23: The controversy surrounding the sudden death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar has intensified, with Kailashahar MLA Birajit Sinha on Thursday demanding a judicial inquiry into the circumstances leading to the senior police officer’s death.

Addressing reporters, Sinha said the absence of official clarity regarding the incident has led to widespread speculation and public concern. He maintained that the death of a serving Director General of Police is a matter of immense public importance and requires an impartial investigation to establish the facts.

“When a senior police officer dies under such circumstances, people deserve to know the truth. Only a judicial probe headed by a sitting or retired High Court judge can ensure transparency, impartiality and public confidence in the investigation,” the MLA said.

Sinha stated that if the death is found to be a case of suicide, the reasons and circumstances that led to such an extreme step must be thoroughly investigated and placed before the public. He argued that without an independent judicial inquiry, doubts surrounding the incident would continue to persist.

The MLA said the demand for a judicial probe is not confined to political parties alone but reflects the sentiments of people across Tripura. According to him, citizens are seeking a credible and transparent investigation to remove uncertainty surrounding the case.

“People across the state, and even outside Tripura, want to know the real cause behind this mysterious death. A judicial inquiry is the only way to uncover the truth and ensure that justice is done,” Sinha said.

He also appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to take immediate steps to order a judicial investigation, stating that a prompt decision would help dispel public suspicion and restore confidence in the administration.

Dhankar’s death has triggered shock across the state and prompted demands from various quarters for an impartial and transparent investigation. With the latest call from the Kailashahar MLA, pressure is mounting on the state government to clarify the circumstances surrounding the senior IPS officer’s death and ensure that any inquiry is conducted in a fair, independent and credible manner.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the cause of death, and the investigation is ongoing.
