Agartala, July 28: The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has sanctioned financial assistance of ₹3 lakh for the kidney transplant of Ashok Das, a resident of Phulkumari village under the Matabari Assembly constituency in Tripura, West Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, Deb said the assistance was approved after he forwarded Das’s application to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund following a request for financial support for his medical treatment. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending timely assistance to the patient.

“I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning ₹3 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund towards the treatment of Ashok Das. I pray for his speedy recovery,” Deb said.

According to the MP, the financial aid was approved within a short period after the application was submitted, reflecting the Centre’s commitment to providing timely support to patients requiring advanced medical treatment.

Deb also noted that on several earlier occasions, the Prime Minister had approved requests forwarded by him for financial assistance under the PMNRF for critically ill patients from Tripura. He said such support has benefited many families struggling to bear the high cost of specialised medical care.

An official sanction letter issued by the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund confirmed that a grant of ₹3 lakh had been approved to partially meet the expenses of Das’s kidney transplant. The procedure is scheduled to be carried out at the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) in Kolkata.

The sanction letter stated that the approved amount would be released directly to the hospital after it submits details of the actual expenditure incurred during the transplant procedure to the PMNRF. It further clarified that the assistance released would not exceed 50 per cent of the total treatment cost or the sanctioned amount of ₹3 lakh, whichever is lower.

The PMNRF has also directed the hospital authorities to verify the authenticity of the patient’s details and ensure that the transplant is conducted strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, along with other applicable medical and legal regulations.

The financial assistance is expected to provide significant relief to the patient’s family by easing the burden of the costly transplant procedure and related medical expenses.
