Agartala: In a significant boost to higher technical education in Tripura, the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Agartala, has announced the launch of two new B.Tech programmes in Computer Science and Engineering with specialisation in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the academic session 2026–27.

According to an official release, each of the new courses will have an intake capacity of 60 students. The programmes have been introduced with the objective of equipping young aspirants with advanced knowledge and practical skills in emerging areas of computing, automation, and data-driven technologies. The move is expected to create new academic and professional opportunities for students in Tripura and the wider Northeast.

Admissions to the new courses will be conducted through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process as well as through NIELIT’s own entrance examination, ensuring multiple avenues for eligible candidates to secure seats in the institute.

NIELIT Agartala, which functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, already offers several academic programmes, including Diploma in Computer Science and Technology, Diploma in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), and M.Tech in Data Engineering. With the addition of these AI and ML-oriented B.Tech programmes, the institute aims to strengthen its position as a leading centre for modern technical education in the region.

Officials also pointed out that Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students enrolled at NIELIT are exempted from paying tuition fees, a measure intended to improve access to higher education for students from marginalized communities.

The announcement comes at a time when demand for professionals with expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is growing rapidly across sectors such as information technology, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and digital services. By introducing these specialised courses, NIELIT Agartala seeks to align its academic offerings with the country’s expanding digital transformation agenda.

Education observers believe the new programmes will not only benefit students in Tripura but may also attract aspiring engineers from other northeastern states, further boosting the region’s standing in India’s technology and innovation landscape.
