Agartala, July 28: National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Tuesday began her three-day visit to Tripura with a series of programmes aimed at promoting women’s empowerment, strengthening women’s rights, and addressing key social issues affecting women and children.
The visit commenced with a high-level interaction titled “Interaction with Women Representatives and Women Activists” at the State Guest House in Agartala. The special session brought together women leaders, activists, and stakeholders to discuss measures for enhancing women’s participation in governance and social development.
Tripura Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy joined Rahatkar at the programme, where discussions centred on protecting women’s rights, encouraging leadership among women, and creating an enabling environment for their active role in society. The participants also deliberated on ways to strengthen institutional support for women and improve awareness about legal rights and welfare schemes.
According to the NCW’s itinerary, Rahatkar will continue her visit on Wednesday with a series of engagements in Udaipur, Gomati district. She is scheduled to participate in the ‘She Serves’ programme organised by the Gomati Zilla Parishad and inspect the functioning of the district’s One Stop Centre, which provides integrated support to women affected by violence.
She will also attend a public awareness programme at Rajarshi Hall, focusing on the prevention of child marriage and its social consequences. Minister Tinku Roy and MLA Abhishek Debroy are expected to participate in the event. Later in the day, the NCW Chairperson will hold a review meeting with district administration and senior police officials to assess issues related to women’s safety and welfare.
On July 30, Rahatkar is scheduled to visit Agartala Central Jail before meeting the Acting Director General of Police and other senior police officers. She will then participate in a programme on preventing stalking and launch the official website of the Tripura State Women’s Commission at a hotel in Agartala.
The final leg of her visit includes participation in a workshop at Sukanta Academy on the prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace, where experts and stakeholders are expected to discuss legal safeguards, awareness initiatives, and best practices for ensuring safe work environments for women.
The details of the visit were announced by Tripura Women’s Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma at a press conference on Tuesday. She was accompanied by Vice Chairperson Madhumita Choudhury, Member Secretary Pallabi Roy, and other members of the Commission. Officials said the visit aims to strengthen coordination between the NCW, the state government, and local institutions to advance women’s empowerment and gender justice in Tripura.
