Agartala: Jan 25: National Tourism Day 2025 was celebrated on Saturday at the Geetanjali Guest House in Agartala, with Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurating the event. He was accompanied by Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumdar and officials from the Tripura Tourism Department.
In his speech, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted the significant growth in tourism since 2018, noting that the influx of tourists has inspired the state government to further develop the sector. He stated that over 26 lakh tourists have visited the state since 2018, resulting in a substantial increase in revenue, with 31 crore rupees collected to date. The growing number of international tourists visiting Tripura has also contributed to the state’s tourism boom.
To take Tripura’s tourism to new heights, the state government has initiated several plans, which are expected to take about one and a half to two years to complete. One of the key developments mentioned by the minister was the improvement of basic facilities at Unakoti, which previously lacked proper accommodation and dining options. With 70 crore rupees from the Asian Development Bank, work is underway, with 20-25% of the project already completed. Additionally, efforts are being made to enhance the Chobimura area with an investment of 60 crore rupees.
The minister also discussed plans to upgrade Jampui Hill, the only hill station in the state, by converting the Eden Lodge into a star-category hotel to provide better facilities for tourists. Furthermore, the government is introducing advanced tourism options like paragliding and a toy train to promote tourism within Tripura, ensuring that residents don’t need to travel outside the state for such experiences.
Minister Chowdhury also emphasized the role of tour operators in guiding tourists from outside the state and abroad, suggesting training opportunities for them to better promote Tripura’s tourism. The event also featured a photo exhibition showcasing various tourist destinations in Tripura, which was visited by the minister.
