Agartala, July 30: In a heartwarming gesture of compassion and social responsibility, the Tripura Agricultural Graduates Association has donated Rs 3 lakh to support the treatment of little Manashree, a child battling Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare and life-threatening genetic disorder that requires expensive medical care.

The donation cheque was handed over to Manashree’s father in the presence of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath during a programme held on Thursday. The contribution is part of an ongoing statewide effort to raise funds for the child’s treatment.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Nath praised the members and officers of the Agriculture Department for responding positively to his appeal to extend support to the family. He said the contribution reflected the department’s commitment to humanity beyond its official responsibilities.

“This gesture proves that the Agriculture Department is not just an institution responsible for implementing government policies, but a family that stands together in times of crisis,” the Minister said.

He also urged officials and employees across the department to voluntarily contribute towards Manashree’s treatment, emphasizing that even small donations can make a significant difference when people come together for a common cause.

Highlighting the scale of the challenge, Nath noted that the treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy is extremely expensive and cannot be managed by a single family alone. He appealed to citizens, organisations and institutions across the state to extend financial support so that the child can receive timely treatment.

The Minister pointed out that the campaign has already received support from several quarters. Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, along with numerous organisations, institutions and well-wishers, have already made contributions. Nath also informed that he has personally donated towards the cause.

Drawing inspiration from Tripura’s collective response during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent flood relief efforts, the Minister called upon people to once again unite for a humanitarian cause.

“Every contribution, whether big or small, brings hope to the family. Together, we can help secure Manashree’s treatment and give her a chance at a healthier future,” he said.

The donation by the Agricultural Graduates Association has been widely appreciated and is expected to encourage more individuals and organisations to join the campaign to support the child in her fight against SMA.
