Agartala: Jan 06: On Monday, Sudhangshu Das, the Minister for Fisheries and Animal Resource Development in Tripura, attended the “North East Region Meet 2025” in Guwahati, Assam, focused on the development of the fisheries sector in Northeast India. The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, under the chairmanship of Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh.

During his address, Minister Sudhangshu Das emphasized the Tripura government’s efforts to boost fish production and achieve self-sufficiency in the sector. He noted that Tripura has a fish production capacity of 2 lakh metric tons, with 38,594 hectares dedicated to fish culture. However, the state’s current production is 85,000 metric tons, while the demand stands at 117,000 metric tons. The shortfall is met through imports from neighboring states like West Bengal, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh. Minister Das pointed out that fish is a vital part of the state’s diet, with 98% of the population consuming fish regularly.

He also discussed the challenges faced by the fisheries sector in Tripura, particularly the issues related to Biofloc and pearl culture, which are seasonal and require more advanced technological intervention. These challenges are crucial to address for achieving the state’s goal of self-sufficiency in fish production.

The meeting, attended by fisheries ministers from across the Northeast, allowed the Union Minister to highlight the government’s commitment to improving the fisheries sector in the region. The goal is to create a self-sustaining fisheries industry in Northeast India, ensuring adequate fish production and addressing the challenges faced by states like Tripura. The government aims to make the sector more resilient and innovative for long-term growth and sustainability.
