Mayor Dipak Majumder on Wednesday inspected the Battala Mahashmashan and the adjoining Howrah Market area in Agartala to review the existing infrastructure and discuss measures for improving civic facilities. The visit was carried out in the presence of local corporator Janabi Das and officials of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
During the inspection, the Mayor examined the present condition of the cremation ground and interacted with officials regarding the problems faced by residents, particularly during the monsoon season. According to him, many families encountered serious difficulties in performing last rites last year due to waterlogging and other weather-related challenges at the cremation ground.
Addressing reporters after the visit, Majumder said that the municipal authorities have decided to construct an additional cremation facility at a higher location within the Mahashmashan premises. The step aims to ensure that funeral services can continue smoothly even during heavy rains.
“In view of the difficulties faced during the previous monsoon, we have planned to build another cremation space at an elevated site so that people do not face inconvenience while performing last rites during the rainy season,” the Mayor said.
He added that the proposed facility will improve accessibility for grieving families and ensure uninterrupted cremation services throughout the year. The initiative forms part of a broader plan by the Agartala Municipal Corporation to upgrade civic infrastructure and public amenities in the area.
Apart from expanding cremation facilities, the Mayor also announced a beautification project for the Mahashmashan complex. The plan includes installing improved lighting arrangements across the premises to enhance visibility and ensure safety during evening and nighttime hours.
Majumder further informed that the Shiva temple located within the cremation ground will also be renovated and given a new aesthetic appearance as part of the overall development project.
Corporator Janabi Das said the inspection was aimed at identifying practical issues faced by residents so that necessary development works can be undertaken at the earliest. Municipal officials accompanying the team noted several areas requiring immediate attention and said proposals for the improvements would soon be finalized.
