Agartala, June 1: Frustration among homebuyers of the Light House housing project at Border Gol Chakkar spilled onto the streets on Monday as scores of beneficiaries staged a protest outside the office of the Tripura Urban Planning & Development Authority (TUDA), demanding immediate resolution of the long-delayed project.

The agitating customers alleged that despite repeated assurances from authorities, the promised flats have not been handed over even years after the original deadline. According to the protesters, possession was initially expected in 2022, but nearly five years have passed without any concrete progress toward completion.

Many beneficiaries claimed they had already paid substantial amounts in two or three installments, believing they would soon receive their homes. Instead, they say they have been left waiting indefinitely while construction work progresses at a sluggish pace.

“We invested our hard-earned savings with the dream of owning a home. Today, that dream has turned into a nightmare. We have been waiting for years, but there is still no certainty about when we will get our flats,” said one of the protesting buyers.

The protesters accused TUDA of making repeated commitments without delivering tangible results. They expressed growing disappointment over what they described as a lack of accountability and transparency regarding the project’s status.

The aggrieved buyers put forward a clear demand: either complete the project and hand over the flats at the earliest or refund the deposited money with interest. “If the authorities are unable to provide us with the promised homes, then our money should be returned immediately along with appropriate interest,” another beneficiary said.

Although TUDA officials have reportedly assured customers that the flats will be delivered by December 2026, many buyers remain unconvinced. Pointing to the current pace of construction, several protesters questioned whether the deadline could realistically be achieved.

“Looking at the present condition of the project, it seems unlikely that the work will be completed anytime soon. At this rate, we may have to wait several more years,” a protester remarked.

The beneficiaries also appealed directly to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to intervene in the matter and ensure justice for the affected families.

Warning of stronger agitation in the future, the protesters said they would intensify their movement if TUDA fails to meet its commitments, stressing that they can no longer afford to wait endlessly for either their homes or their money.
