Agartala, June 1: In a significant step toward safeguarding animal health and strengthening rural livelihoods, the Department of Animal Resource Development (ARDD) on Monday launched a comprehensive Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination programme at Dighalia Gram Panchayat under the Bamutia RD Block.

The vaccination campaign was formally inaugurated by Sudhangshu Das, Minister for Animal Resources Development, Fisheries and Scheduled Caste Welfare, who highlighted the critical need to protect livestock from Foot and Mouth Disease, one of the most contagious viral diseases affecting cattle and other cloven-hoofed animals.

Addressing farmers, livestock owners and local residents during the inauguration programme, the minister stressed that healthy livestock is the backbone of the rural economy and plays a crucial role in supporting agricultural activities and ensuring income security for farming households.

“Livestock is a valuable asset for rural families. Protecting cattle from diseases like FMD is essential not only for animal welfare but also for sustaining the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and cattle rearers across the state,” Das said.

He explained that the vaccination drive aims to prevent outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease, which can severely affect animal productivity, reduce milk production, and lead to significant economic losses for farmers. By ensuring timely vaccination, the government seeks to create a healthier livestock population and minimize the risk of disease transmission.

The minister appealed to all livestock owners to actively participate in the campaign and cooperate with veterinary teams visiting villages and rural areas. “The success of this programme depends on collective participation. Together, we can build a healthy, safe and productive livestock sector that contributes to the prosperity of our rural communities,” he remarked.

Officials from the department informed that the vaccination programme is expected to cover a large number of cattle across the Bamutia block and surrounding areas. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen veterinary healthcare services, improve disease surveillance, and enhance rural economic resilience through better livestock management.

Local farmers welcomed the launch of the programme and expressed optimism that the vaccination campaign would help protect their cattle from disease-related losses. Many said that timely vaccination would not only ensure healthier animals but also contribute to stable incomes and improved economic security for rural households.

The programme marks another important effort by the state government to promote sustainable livestock development and support the welfare of farming communities across Tripura.
