Agartala, July 11: The program of purchase of paddy from farmers at minimum support price has started in Tripura from today. In this, lakhs of farmers in Tripura will benefit financially. Minister of Food and Public Procurement Department Sushanta Chowdhury said this in a tone of conviction in an event organized at the inter-state truck terminus at Madhavbari in Jiraniya sub-division this morning.
On this day, he said, from today, the process of buying paddy for the current rabi season from the farmers of the state at subsidized price has started in a joint initiative of Tripura’s food and public procurement and agriculture and farmer welfare department. As a part of this, the purchase of paddy at the minimum support price from the farmers of Jiraniya sub-division has again started under the initiative of FCI at the inter-state truck terminus at Madhavbari today. Tripura government is buying paddy from farmers at the rate of Tk 2040 per quintal. This year, the Tripura government has set a target of purchasing 35,000 metric tonnes of paddy from farmers.
According to him, the Chief Minister has always been sympathetic to the farmers in Tripura. Farmers will get a much higher price than what they get by selling paddy in the open market at the government paddy buying center.
Chowdhury claims that as a result of this program, farmers’ enthusiasm has increased to increase the price of paddy As a result, yield also increased. Thus, the financial burden of the Tripura government increased, but the farmers benefited financially. His sarcasm, in the past there was no arrangement for purchasing paddy through MSP in Tripura. As a result the farmers were deprived.
